I've just accepted a new job at Heriot-Watt University in the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering. I'll be transferring my Fellowship and then in 2015 I will start as a Lecturer. I'm really excited about the move. I already have several collaborations with people at Heriot-Watt and look forward to starting some exciting new projects. The security of a permanent position is also great news for growing my research group.
My Masters by Research student Despoina Gavriilidou has been offered a PhD position at Imperial. Congratulations and all the best to her! I'm sure she be very successful.
Both my Heriot-Watt Crucible funding applications were successful. The ChipSHOP team of myself, Tom Aspray, Iain Bethune, Birgit Gaiser, Maiwenn Kersaudy-Kerhoas and Prashant Valluri are going to be working on a project aiming to improve the understanding and the design of lab-on-chip devices for separation of complex biological and environmental samples. Also along with Pamela Cameron and Birgit Gaiser I'll be looking into nanoparticle impacts on waterborne protozoa.
I've set up a dedicated blog to reporting on my Media Fellowship experiences: http://helenbridlemediafellowship.wordpress.com/
ESF Junior Summit 'Water: Unite and Divide. Interdisciplinary approaches for a sustainable future'6/7/2012 The European Science Foundation are holding a Junior Summit for early career researchers on the topic of water, which will take place in Italy between 27th and 30th August this year. My application to attend this interdisciplinary event was successful and I'm really looking forward to networking with early career researchers from around Europe and hopefully starting some new collaborations.
I have been shortlisted for the Royal Society Pairing Scheme. Not guaranteed I will get a place though - it depends on the number of MPs and Civil servants that the Royal Society are able to recruit to take part, and most importantly their geographical locations and interests. Hopefully, they will find someone to pair with me. If successful, I'll attend a Week in Westminster learning about policy development and then spend time on reciprocal visits with the MP or Civil servant.
